Let’s talk about Play Therapy
Hey there,
If you’re here, you’re probably looking for a way to support your child through something challenging. Maybe they’re struggling with big emotions, anxiety, or a tough transition like starting school or adjusting to family changes. As a parent, it can be so hard to see your child hurting and not know exactly how to help.
That’s where the clinicians at Circle City Play Therapy come in. We have Resident Play Therapists, and we work with kids much like what’s mentioned above—kids who are navigating tough emotions and situations, often without the words to explain what they’re feeling. Through the medium of play, we help them process those feelings, build new skills and discover their own strengths. I’ll explain a little more about how Play Therapy works and how it might help your child.
What is Play Therapy?
Imagine a space where your child can fully be themselves—a place where they can explore their feelings, tell their stories, and work through their challenges using their natural language: play. That’s what Play Therapy is. For kids, play is how they communicate and make sense of the world. In a Play Therapy session, your child might use dolls, sand trays, art supplies, or games to express themselves and work through what’s on their mind. While it might look like “just play” to an outsider, it so much more.
Through play, your child can safely explore their emotions, learn coping strategies, and practice new ways of dealing with challenges—all in a space where they feel understood and supported.
How Can Play Therapy Help My Child?
Every child is unique, but here’s what we’ve seen Play Therapy do for so many kids:
Help with Big Feelings: Kids often feel overwhelmed by emotions like anger, sadness, or fear. Play Therapy gives them tools to understand and manage those feelings.
Builds Confidence: Whether they’re struggling with self-esteem or feeling unsure in social situations, Play Therapy helps kids recognize their strengths.
Improve Behavior: If your child is having trouble listening, following directions, or managing impulses, Play Therapy can help them learn new skills.
Process Through Tough Experiences: From grief to family changes, kids often carry more than we realize. Play Therapy gives them a safe space to process and heal.
How Does This Work for Your as a Caregiver?
We know that when your child is struggling, it affects the whole family. That’s why we make sure you’re part of the process, too. When we work together, we’ll keep you updated on your child’s progress, help you understand what they’re working through, and share tips for how you can support them at home. You’re not alone in this—we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
